Sterling Bank sponsors South‑East Mathematics and Science Olympiad
The new Olympiad gives secondary students a chance to benchmark their STEM skills and attract private‑sector support.
Sterling Bank has announced sponsorship of the South‑East Mathematics and Science Olympiad, a competition for secondary school students in the region. The event was unveiled at a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony at the bank’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos, in partnership with Educare, an education consultancy.
The Olympiad aims to identify and nurture exceptional young minds and to encourage interest in STEM subjects. A joint statement said participants will have a rigorous platform to benchmark their knowledge, refine problem‑solving skills and go beyond the standard classroom curriculum.
Edward Ogunmekan, Chief Growth Officer of Sterling Bank, said the competition was designed to bridge the gap between latent talent and development opportunities. Alex Onyia, Chief Executive Officer of Educare, highlighted the need for private‑sector capital in educational transformation, noting that sustainable national progress depends on substantial investment in the upcoming generation. Yonodu Okeugo, Group Head of Education Finance at Sterling Bank, added that the Olympiad will spotlight schools that consistently nurture academic excellence, allowing stakeholders to adapt and scale successful teaching models.
The Olympiad builds on Sterling Bank’s existing Sterling Online Maths Quiz by adding integrated science subjects. The competition aligns with the bank’s HEART strategy, which prioritises Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Transportation.
