University of Cross River State lecturers resume indefinite strike over unpaid salaries
ASUU has halted all teaching at UCRS after two months of unpaid salaries and a broken 2025 agreement, warning the strike will continue until payment.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Cross River State has resumed an indefinite strike because the state government has not paid two months’ salaries and has not honoured a 2025 agreement. The union announced the decision at an emergency congress on Monday in the Prefab Hall of the Calabar main campus, after a 90‑day window granted by Governor Bassey Otu expired on 21 October.
ASUU chairman Dr Patrick Ushie told journalists that the strike was suspended earlier only because of government intervention, but the promised payments and other welfare issues remain unresolved. He said lecturers are still owed September and October salaries and that rumours of approval for payment have not been confirmed in writing. Ushie instructed members to withdraw all teaching and supervisory duties until the grievances are addressed, while also stating that staff would return to work immediately if the outstanding salaries were paid.
The union’s statement, made available to journalists on Tuesday in Calabar, stressed that the industrial action will continue indefinitely until the state government implements the agreed terms. The strike affects all academic activities on campus, with no teaching, supervision or related services expected while the dispute persists.
