SSANU urges government to pay full 35% salary review and arrears
The union says the October fund release is insufficient and will keep pressure on the government until all CONTTA entitlements are met.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) said it will keep pressure on the Federal Government to implement the 2026 salary‑review agreement in full, including all arrears and entitlements. The comment was made by SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim at the union’s 2026 National Women Conference in Abuja.
Ibrahim reminded delegates that the June 2026 agreement provides a 35 per cent salary review under the Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTTA), with higher allowances and improved conditions of service from 1 January 2026. He noted that after a 14‑day ultimatum from the union’s National Executive Council, the government released funds covering eight months of CONTTA arrears on 7 October.
Ibrahim said the release does not amount to full implementation and the union will not relent until every provision is met. He praised members, especially women, for their solidarity during the negotiations and highlighted the conference theme, “Healthy Women, Strong Union: Positioning SSANU Women for Leadership and National Relevance.”
National Women Coordinator Ijeoma Kalu called for an environment that guarantees equal leadership opportunities for women across Nigerian universities. She urged stronger mentorship, professional development programmes and networks to equip younger female staff with the skills and confidence needed for leadership roles. Both leaders asked participants to turn conference discussions into concrete actions that improve women’s welfare and advance gender inclusion in the university system.
