The Unity Schools Old Students Association plans to launch a N500 million Education Relief Fund as an immediate intervention fund for distressed unity colleges and students in the country. Seyi Gambo made this announcement after emerging as the new president-general of the association.
Gambo spoke about critical challenges affecting unity schools, including 18.4 million out-of-school children nationally, 14.4 million substance abuse users among students aged 15 and above, and land encroachment affecting Federal Government College Kano and Federal Government College Kaduna. He stated that graduating from a unity school was a privilege that came with lifelong responsibilities extending to family, fellow alumni, the country, successor generations, and the Creator.
New Leadership and Plans
The new administration, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education, will conduct a national infrastructure audit of unity schools, as well as a comprehensive facility review and intervention roadmap. The association also plans to make a joint presentation to the National Assembly on national education policy, unity school security, and funding. Gambo stated that it would deliver Independent Power Projects to 17 schools and resettle displaced campuses within one year.
The election took place during the 50th Plenary and elective Annual General Meeting held at the Nigerian Universities Commission in Abuja. According to results released by the Electoral Committee, Gambo polled 305 votes to defeat Chinedu Amure, who secured 212 votes. Jayeola Adebola polled 287 votes to defeat Rufun Ibrahim Jauro, who secured 233 votes for the position of Vice-President-General. Favour Sabo Michael won the Financial Secretary position with 345 votes against Semirat Ajide, who polled 173 votes. Hamman Adil Adamu was elected Treasurer unopposed. Kester Idogho secured the Assistant Secretary-General position with 354 votes against Hauwa Idi Jimeta, who polled 170 votes, while Idoreyen A. Ebong was elected Secretary-General unopposed. The results showed 14 total invalid votes across the various positions and were signed by Electoral Committee Secretary Tayelolu Ojo and Chairman Ahmed Tijjani Lawal on October 24, 2026.
