Senate moves to give NUC more powers over university violations
A new Senate bill aims to give the National Universities Commission stronger legal authority to enforce academic standards and penalise non-compliant institutions across Nigeria.

The Senate has passed a bill for second reading to repeal and re-enact the National Universities Commission Act 2026. According to the Nigerian Tribune, the lawmakers want to give the commission more authority because of growing violations in universities.
Chief Whip Senator Mohammed Monguno said the law will help the commission enforce academic standards and punish offenders. It also aims to encourage research, update NUC governance, and cover funding shortages.
The Senate has also ordered an immediate probe into Tansian University in Anambra State. The investigation follows complaints about administrative excesses and compliance issues at the institution.
