The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society has opened applications for the Impact AI Fellowship 2027. The ten-week programme runs from 16 August to 22 October 2027 and is aimed at professionals and researchers who want to examine how artificial intelligence affects society and the environment.

The fellowship brings together participants from academia, journalism, civil society organisations, public institutions and companies that work with AI, sustainability or the public interest. Fellows will assess a real AI application promoted as serving the public good, using the Impact AI Method developed by the institute’s transdisciplinary research project.

The programme includes expert guidance, workshops, peer-learning activities, independent research and the preparation of a final impact assessment report. Selected participants will receive a fixed stipend of €5,000 and will spend two in-person weeks in Berlin, Germany.

Applicants should consult the official fellowship information for any further details about payment arrangements and whether particular expenses are covered. The stipend should not automatically be interpreted as a salary or as confirmation that travel, accommodation and other costs will be reimbursed separately.

Applicants may propose an AI project they wish to investigate, but this is not mandatory. The institute will support fellows without a pre-identified case through a call for cases, helping them find a suitable AI application for assessment.

Throughout the fellowship, participants will receive close guidance from the Impact AI research team, engage with expert contributions, and exchange ideas with peers from diverse professional backgrounds. The Impact AI Fellowship is funded by the VolkswagenStiftung and is conducted in partnership with Greenpeace Deutschland and Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie Deutschland.

By completing a full impact assessment and producing a final report, fellows will contribute evidence to broader discussions on responsible AI, sustainability and the public interest. Applications must be submitted by 15 January 2027. Interested candidates should consult the official fellowship information for details on the application process and any additional requirements.
