ATBU inducts 230 biochemistry graduates into the NSBMB
Two hundred and thirty ATBU biochemistry graduates have joined the NSBMB as the society pushes for a new research Institute in Nigeria.
Two hundred and thirty graduates of the Department of Biochemistry at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi have been inducted as graduate members of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The event marked the second induction organised by the department. It took place under the conference theme of the fate inheritance research in Africa and the contribution of biochemistry to public health, diseases, and medicine development.
ATBU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibrahim Garba urged the new inductees to use their skills to tackle societal challenges and question outdated practices in their workplaces. He advised them to act as catalysts for positive change across healthcare, industry, agriculture, technology, and entrepreneurship. He also stressed the importance of professional integrity, resilience, collaboration, and continuous learning.
In his keynote address titled the genomic future of Africa, Professor Ishaya Yohana challenged the graduates to identify problems within their fields and create practical solutions. He explained that genomics helps researchers understand diseases, develop effective treatments, and study the genetic makeup of organisms. He noted that biochemists are pioneers in genomics because the field started with biochemistry and molecular biology.
Representing the National President of the NSBMB O. M. Wegwu, Vice-President Mohammed Adamu Milala commended ATBU for sustaining the induction programme. Wegwu disclosed that the society is working to establish an Institute of Biochemistry in Nigeria. The proposal has passed through the National Assembly and awaits presidential assent. He added that the society secured a plot of land near Abuja to build a N15m complex for research and innovation.
Speaking on behalf of the new members, the pioneer and outgoing President of the NSBMB ATBU branch, Shittu Salih, thanked the university management and lecturers for their support. He described the training period as demanding but rewarding. He stated that the graduates are prepared for their professional responsibilities.
