How to start a new semester strong

What to do in the first two weeks of a new semester: register on time, gather your materials, set a weekly routine and stay ahead before tests begin.

The first weeks of a semester feel slow, so many students relax and plan to catch up later. Later is when tests, assignments and practicals all arrive together. A little work now makes the rest of the semester much lighter.

Week 1: get organised

  • Complete your course registration early, and confirm every course with your course adviser before the deadline. Keep a copy of your registration form.
  • Write down each course code, title, unit load and lecturer, and where and when each class holds.
  • Get the course outline for every course. It tells you the topics, how you will be assessed and which texts to use.
  • Join your class WhatsApp groups, and save the numbers of your class rep and course rep.

Week 2: build your routine

  • Set fixed study times for each course on most days, even if only 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Read over each lecture on the same day you take it. Ten minutes while it is fresh saves hours before the exam.
  • Start a folder or notebook for each course, and keep your notes, handouts and past questions together.
  • Find past questions for each course now, so you know early what the lecturer likes to ask.

Through the semester

  • Do assignments as soon as they are given, while the topic is fresh.
  • Test yourself at the end of each week: close your notes and write down what you remember.
  • Track your grades and work out what you need in each course to reach your target CGPA.
  • Rest well. Sleep helps you remember what you studied.
