SIWES logbook: what to write and how to keep it

How to fill your SIWES logbook during industrial training: daily entries, weekly summaries, diagrams, and getting it signed.

SIWES (the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme) is run by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). Your logbook is the record of what you did and learned during your placement, and it is assessed along with your report.

Daily entries

  • Write the date and what you did that day in clear, specific steps.
  • Name the equipment, software or procedures you used.
  • Note what you learned, not just what you watched.

Weekly summary

At the end of each week, summarise the main work and skills of the week. Add labelled diagrams where your field needs them.

Signatures

Get your industry supervisor to sign each week, and keep the logbook ready for visits from your school supervisor. Missing signatures are a common reason students lose marks.

Write it as you go

Fill it in every day while details are fresh. Rewriting weeks of entries at the end is hard and it shows.

MyUniPal turns your rough daily notes into clear logbook entries and weekly summaries.
