Faborode says stronger institutions needed for university innovation
The former vice‑chancellor argues that better industry ties and updated curricula are essential for turning research into practical solutions for Nigeria's challenges.
Prof. Michael Faborode marked his seventieth birthday by looking back on more than forty years in academia and public service. He said Nigeria has many ideas and talented people, but university research often fails to become practical solutions because supportive environments are missing.
He urged universities to work more closely with industry and to strengthen the research ecosystem. Building partnerships and encouraging innovation, he argued, will help address national challenges.
Faborode highlighted agricultural engineering as an area that must change. He called for curricula that prepare graduates to tackle food insecurity, climate change and mechanisation with digital and resilient technologies.
